Most of domestic low-grade kaolin ore has a limited application as raw ceramics and refractory materials due to the presence of anorthite and quartz in larger quantities. Therefore, this study was carried out to develop a dry separation technology in an effort to beneficiate the low-grade kaolin ores having different grades. Representative samples were taken from the Daemyoung and Hadong Kaolin Mines. An pin mill was first used to selectively grind the softer components of the ore. Then air classifier was used to recover the kaolin particles at the three cutting points of 18, 25, and $34{mu}m$. The optimum classifying conditions for a satisfactory grade and recovery was obtained at $34{mu}m$. Grinding at about 7,000rpm was found to be the most effective in producing size with a minimum offset in whiteness. The beneficiation operation enabled the classification to reject about 20% $Fe_2O_3$, 50% CaO and 50% $TiO_2$ from the raw feed. Both plasticity and whiteness were improved to satisfactory levels.
