This study is aimed to review the situation in which the Korean Academy of Social Welfare confronts a potential identity-crisis and to propose some measures necessary for overcoming the challenge. The Basic Act for the Healthy Family under which the government, central or local, may set up Supporting Centers for the Healthy Family in their community and employ Health Family Welfare Workers(HFWW) for practices came into effect in 2004. HFWWs are expected to be educated in a way different from the established social work. The Act thus prompted some adjacent disciplines to the study of social welfare to trespass the traditional territory of social work. This is the culmination of the recent phenomena facing the Academy. To respond adequately to the new phenomena, this study suggests that the members of the Academy must do two things, connotative and denotative. For the connotative development, a clearing house for field work education and the joint appointment system of faculty are recommended to promote cooperative efforts to the enhancement of quality-field work as well as curriculum development. For denotative improvement, the establishment of a fund to assist publications of a journal written in English is preferred.
