The current seismic design code uses a displacement-based design scheme for structural designs of special shear walls in tall buildings. But the displacement-based design in the design code does not consider contributions of yield deformation. In this study, the contributions of yield deformation to total deformation of the special shear wall was analyzed through numerical parametric analyses. Since general tall building structures consist of moment frames as well as shear walls, the effect of moment frames on yield deformation was analyzed. For RC tall buildings, the yield deformation of the wall increased as the building height increased and reached more than 30% of total deformation. Also, as the rigidity of moment frames increased and the cantilever behavior of wall was more restricted, the yield deformation decreased. Therefore, based on the numerical results, the evaluation method for the yield deformation of shear walls was proposed considering interactions with moment frames, and the existing design equation for special shear wall was modified based on the proposed method for evaluating yield deformation.
