이 논문은 한국 미국 대학의 지리학과 학부과정 교과목을 비교하고 분석하는 연구이다. <지리학 개론>은 학부과정 교과목으로 개설하는 경우가 매우 드문데, 이는 지리학의 네 분야(인문지리 분야, 자연지리 분야, 지역지리학 분야, 기타 분야)를 한 과목으로 통합하여 개설하기 어렵기 때문일 것이다. 한국 대학 지리학과에서는 인문지리학 분야의 교과목 비율(39.4%)이 자연지리학 분야의 교과목 비율(24.5%)보다 크지만, 미국 대학 지리학과에서는 자연지리학 분야의 교과목 비율(32.8%)이 인문지리학 분야의 교과목 비율(29.4%)보다 조금 더 큰 것으로 나타난다. 지역지리학 분야의 교과목 비율을 비교하면, 미국의 비율(18.1%)이 한국의 비율(13.8%)보다 크다. 이는 미국 대학 지리학과에서 지역지리학 분야가 보다 더 강조되고 있다는 사실을 말해준다. 한국 대학 지리학과 교과과정은 미국 대학 지리학과 교과과정을 수용하여 정착시킨 것이기 때문에 양자는 매우 유사한 면을 많이 갖고 있다. 그렇지만 지리학의 네 분야가 차지하는 몫에서는 약간의 상이성이 나타나는데, 이러한 상이성은 지난 반세기 동안에 한국 지리학과가 놓여있던 역사적 맥락으로 설명할 수 있을 것이다.
This paper aims to compare and analyze the undergraduate geography curriculums of Korean and American universities. <An Introduction to Geography> is rarely offered as an undergraduate geography subject in both Korean and American universities. This may be due to the fact that the four fields of geography(human geography field, physical geography field, regional geography field, and other geography field) are not easily able to be integrated and taught as an independent geography subject. The ratio of the subject number of human geography field(39.4%) is greater than that of physical geography field(24.5%) at the geography departments of Korean universities, but the ratio of the subject number of physical geography field(32.8%) is a little more greater than that of human geography field(29.4%) at the geography departments of American universities. The ratio of the subject number of regional geography fields at the geography department of American universities(18.1%) is greater than that of Korean universities(13.8%), so more stress seems to be laid on the field of regional geography in American universities than in Korean universities. Although the geography curriculums of Korean universities seems to follow generally those of American universities, this paper reveals that there is also differences between the geography curriculums of Korean and American universities in terms of their emphasis on four fields of geography. The differences could be explained by the historical context of the geography departments of Korean universities during the last half a century.
