The present study examined the current research trend in studies related to the deaf-blind by
analyzing the studies in this field that have been published in JVIB during a period of ten years
from 2005 to 2014. We selected nineteen studies based on our data collection and selection
process and conducted a constant comparative analysis on them. Through this process, we found
two characteristics per variable and six categories of topics that were most frequently studied. For
characteristics per variable, we discussed research properties and research subjects depending on
the researchers’ nationality. The six categories of topics were: specific syndromes related to the
deaf-blind, application of intervention models for fostering harmonious interaction and affective
involvement, communication and social experiences, development and application of assessment
tools, concept formation and learning media, and intervention and education applied to single subject
researches. The results indicated that the highest number of studies were being conducted in the
United States and many researchers in the United States were researching a variety of topics
related to the deaf-blind. On the other hand, in the Netherlands, which was second to the United
States in terms of number of studies conducted, a same pool of researchers tended to study on
identical topics. The most studied research subjects were the deaf-blind, their parents, teachers,
guardians, communication partners, and children without disabilities. The present study suggests the
need for more researchers to engage in vigorous research to establish a systemized education
system for the education support and rehabilitation of the deaf-blind in Korea.
