Despite Jeju Special Self-Governing Province being accredited by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a safe city, the province has the highest traffic accident rate and suicides rate in South Korea. Thus showing problems in treating emergency patients due to the limits of being a remote island area. Thus, to understand the present condition of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, this study looked into the current situation by using a descriptive approach through domestic and foreign references, data from Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and reports and data from the Jeju Fire & Disaster Management Bureau. This study focused on data about patients with injuries suffered in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province regarding the conditions of transportation provided by 119 emergency services to medical institutions, emergency rooms visitations over the past 3 years, outpatients and injured patients in emergency rooms at medical institutions, the total number of patients and injured patients per emergency room, the overall number of occurrences for injured patients per region, annual occurrences, type of injury per region according to overall occurrence of patients, occurrence of patient injury on an hourly basis, occurrence of patient injury according to relevant activity, means of visiting a medical institution after an accident occurs, type of accident according to characteristic of the injury, record of patient deaths within the past 3 to 5 years, reason for death, and present condition of transfer of emergency patients to metropolitan area. This study was implemented for the purpose of providing quality emergency medical services to the residence of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. This study suggests practical improvement methods to reduce injured patients by deducting actual problems and suggesting policy. Preliminary data is provided and analyzed for raising the status as a safe city designated by the World Health Organization.
