This study investigated the effects of solution-focused group counseling on intrapersonal empowerment of
adolescents. Of a total of 28 tenth graders from a specialized high school in a City of Gyeonggi-do, 14
students who volunteered to participate in the study were categorized as an experimental group, and 14
students in the same grade were set as a control group. The intervention program was a solution-focused
group counseling program, originally published by the National youth Commission in 2005. For research
design, a pretest-posttest control group design was chosen. The sub-areas of intrapersonal empowerment
include personal ability, perception on group and self-determination. For statistical analysis, SPSS 18.0 was
used for a series of t-test. The results were as follows. First, a partial improvement in the intrapersonal
empowerment among the youth in the experimental group was indicated. Second, from the participant
observation, most group counselling participants noted that participating in the solution-focused group
counseling was meaningful for them in terms of being able to plan their personal goals and dreams and
to find significant changes in their perceptions on empowerment as the sessions went on. This study
partially support the notion that the solution-focused group counseling would help the youth discover their
strength and resources on their own. These results support the possibility that programs based on a
strengths perspective may improve the level of empowerments of adolescents.
