Domestic elderly population is rapidly increasing and the elderly support issue rises as a
social problem due to the aging and the trend toward the nuclear family. The policy of
state, however, falls short of the reality. This elderly support issue is a task to deal not
only with an elderly alone, but together with family and society. Now the retirement home
is increasing by the involvement of the state, but with much difficulties in terms of finance,
manpower and the quality of service. Especially the role of Buddhist social welfare, as a
realm of religious social welfare in private welfare sector, is more increasing. Buddhism
provides the elderly with psychological rest, helps them prepare the death comfortably, and
enables them to recover the self-esteem through spiritual wel-being. Concerning Buddhists,
Buddhistic principle should be educated and religious life be practiced. Not only the elderly
but facilities workers and families should take part in Buddhist lecture meeting for smooth
family relations. Facilities should be opened to community people so that they could
contribute to the social unification. The purpose of this study was to present a plan to
activate the religious life based on the survey of the degree of religious life and the
sympathy to social welfare thoughts focusing on retirement home, the medical welfare
facility for the elderly, that is, Buddhist-operating retirement home.
