The purpose of this study is to develop movie therapy which improves the self esteem and interpersonal
relationship of maladaptive soldiers during the military service, operate this program targeting maladaptive
soldiers who have low self esteem and difficulties in interpersonal relationship, and verify the effect of
this program on improvements on self esteem and interpersonal relationship of maladaptive soldiers. For
the purpose of this study, the research questions are set as follows. First, does movie therapy give the
significant effect on improvements on self esteem of maladaptive soldiers? Second, does movie therapy
give the significant effect on improvements on interpersonal relationship of maladaptive soldiers?
In order to verify the above research questions, 20 maladaptive soldiers who had low self esteem and
difficulties in interpersonal relationship were selected and divided into an experimental group of 10 and a
control group of 10. Pre-tests for self esteem and interpersonal relationship were performed. For research
tools, first, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) which was developed by Rosenberg (965), translated by
Jeon, ByeongJei (1974) and modified by Lee, Young Ja (1996) was used to measure the self esteem of
maladaptive soldiers. Second, circumplex scales eight questions were selected and used from Korean
Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (KIIP). For research procedures, the movie therapy was performed by
giving session of 180 minutes twice a week for a total of 8 sessions. Pre-tests were performed for an
experimental group and a control group prior to the implementation of program. Post-tests were
performed with the same questionnaire targeting an experimental group and a control group after program
was finished. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS program. In order to verify the homogeneity
of pre-tests, mean (M) and standard deviation (SD) were calculated and t-test was conducted to examine
the difference between groups. ANOVA was conducted with results of pre-tests of each group as a
covariate for comparison between groups of post-tests. Conclusions obtained through research results and
discussions are as follows. First, the self esteem of an experimental group participating in movie therapy
was significantly increased compared to a control group. Second, the interpersonal relationship of an
experimental group participating in movie therapy was significantly increased compared to a control group.
Therefore, this study showed that watching movie and cooperative activities had effects on improvements
on self esteem and interpersonal relationship of maladaptive soldiers. It implies that we need to examine
the effects on military life of soldiers in new generation as well as maladaptive soldiers through more
studies in the future. In addition, it is recommended that movie therapy is developed and utilized as the preventive educational program to improve self esteem and interpersonal relationship in military life and
controlled life with our unique situation of military tension between South and North Korea.
