I try to explore the meaning of religion in a mother's life bringing up a mentally disordered child. This is an article studied by using narrative methodology. My research participant, 72 year-old mother, has taken care of her child with mental disorder for more than 20 years since his childhood. Her religious background is Buddhism. The meaning of religion in her(participant) whole life was interpreted as: 'The family life including her has become a religion itself'. Its process was like: 'Religion came across at the beginning of her life', 'It(religion) moved close into her yard over the fence', 'It saturated and embedded deep in her life'. Religion has been a core principle to organize and construct her family life. At the same time it has revealed itself as a form of deep caring for her mental disordered child. As following the result of this research, I would say that religion has great points to see and it should not be overlooked especially in social work fields, because, as we know, social welfare is mainly focusing on the mutual interaction between human beings and their environment. Among those environmental elements or conditions, religion is one of the most important ones. What I would emphasize here are as: some contents in relation to religion should be included in the curriculum of social work education and training coursework. Religion should be considered even more profoundly in the social work fields.
