Despite expectations that the number of refugees would decrease over time as we entered the new millennium, the exact opposite has transpired in the past few years. The refugee crisis around the world serves as a stern warning to the international community and forces us to question the world’s long-term survivability and well-being. This study looks into how and why Global Citizenship Education(GCED) should incorporate the refugee problem in today’s world as an integral part of learning and practice. More specifically, this paper analyzes the various aspects of the refugee issue as it pertains to GCED, and examines how we can expand the scope of the debate on the current refugee crisis in a global context.
This paper will also highlight some of the refugee issues within Korea in order to put into perspective the necessity and direction of GCED.
