Vitrification technology has been widely applied as one of the effective processing methods for radioactive wastes generated in nuclear power plants. The advantages of vitrifying for low- and intermediate-level radioactive wastes has a large volume reduction and good durability of the final products. Plasma melting technology is already applied for the treatment of radioactive waste in many countries. However, in this technology, the highly viscous melting materials often clogs the outlet of the melter. As wastes for the plasma melting and pouring test, soil, ash and a mixture of these were used. Each surrogate waste was prepared according to the weight ratio determined by the glassy slag formulations. The melting test was conducted beginning with the wastes having the lowest viscosity. For the soil wastes with concerns for the molten pools due to high viscosity distributions and failure to form a fair molten pool due to splatter, the mixing ratios were adjusted for implementation of melting so as to maintain appropriate viscosities. In this study, surrogates wastes used for plasma melting experiments consisted of soil and ash to simulate the radioactive wastes generated in Fukushima.
