As the proposed technology uses less amount of fossil fuel, it is more economical from an energy standpoint, and given that the ambient temperature is suitable for oil degradation, according to the characteristics of the injection of microwaves into the soil by the high temperature heating element, the degradation takes place at a faster rate than that of thermal desorption using hot blasts. More specifically, the aim was to develop a new commercial technology for removing oil pollution based on heat treatment that can be used on-site in the field, which meets the following criteria: volatile contaminants are degraded at lower ambient temperatures than that required in the thermal desorption process; low-cost and highly efficient with min. treatment capacity of 3 ton/day using the characteristic of rapidly rising temperatures. For types of oils that include lubricating oil or cutting oil, treatment resulted in TPH concentration that was below the threshold required for restoration of oil contaminated soils, except when treatment was done at 8kW and 500℃. On the other hand, for soils contaminated with the ordinary type of oil, treatment resulted in TPH concentration that was below the same threshold even at 8kW and 500℃ in less than 20 minutes. The rate of oil removal according to classification based on the particle diameter was high at 80%~98%. It was also shown that the treatment rates didn’t differ much according to the particle diameter. To purify the exhaust gas that was generated from the treatment of oil contaminated soil, a gas purification device was manufactured to analyze the exhaust gas. The results showed that dioxins and VOCs released into the atmosphere were below the allowable levels. As such, it is deemed that there won’t be secondary pollution from the purification of oil contaminated soils.
