Hazardous wastes have been classified into the codes of the European List of Wastes according to their characteristics and the industrial process from which they originate. Therefore, this study provides a test method to determine harmful wastes with corrosive characteristics in order to contribute to an effective management of hazardous wastes. In total, 68 sample were taken from 60 sites of corrosive waste discharging manufactures which were selected by using the 'allbaro system'. The results of EPA method 1110A(US) show that all samples with a pH lower than 2 exceeded the corrosive rate standards. The results of the Japanese method reveal that 17 of the investigated acid waste samples with a pH below 2 were below the corrosive rate standards. The cataloging of hazardous waste was investigated for 39 types of waste listed in the Toxic Release Inventory(TRI), 398 types of the European Waste Catalogue(EWC), and 183 types of the Globally Harmonized system of the Classification and Labelling of Chemicals(GHS). Out of these, samples were selected according to a priority(1-4step)procedure for detailed analysis. In both methods, the EPA and the Japanese test, steel is used a determine whether waste is corrosive or not. By comparing hazardous waste, it was found that the US method(1110A) is more appropriate as a test method than the Japanese one.
