A study on the emission of the volatile organic compounds which is contained within bisphenol A polycarbonate was carried out. Methylene chloride and toluene were certified and quantified by Gas chromatography Mass spectrography (GC/MS) analysis. The emissions of methylene chloride and toluene from the surface of polycarbonate at 120℃ increased strongly with time and then increased slightly after one hour. The emission of methylene chloride increased linearly with temperature, whereas that of toluene exhibited no changes up to 80℃ and then strong change at 120℃. This result may be related to low dipole moment and high boiling point of toluene in comparison with those of methylene chloride. The emission of toluene was more than that of methylene chloride regardless of time and temperature. Extraction by drying of polycarbonate at 130-140℃ decreased the emission of methylene chloride, and toluene was not detected by GC/MS analysis. Solvent extraction with ketone decreased the emissions of methylene chloride and toluene strongly.
