In this study, to measure the emotion awareness of the children and
adolescents, the Emotion Awareness Questionnaire for children (EAQ),
which was developed by Rieffe, Meerum Terwogt et al.(2007) and revised
by Rieffe, Oosterveld, Miers, Meerum Terwogt & Ly(2008) was validated.
The questionnaire was conducted in September 2015 on 1454 students of
elementary schools, middle schools and high schools. Then, the exploratory
factor analysis, the reliability analysis & the confirmatory factor analysis
were conducted, Also, for the convergent validity and the discriminant
validity, the correlation analyses with the Trait Meta-Mood Scale(TMMS),
Emotion Expression Scale for Children(EESC), Difficulties in Emotion
Regulation Scale (DERS), Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, and
Child-Adolescent Self-reported Executive Function Difficulty Screening
Questionnaire were conducted. The analysis resulted in the six-factor
structure which was the same as the original scale except the two items
which had low factor loading: Differentiating Emotions, Verbal Sharing of
Emotions, Not Hiding Emotions, Bodily Awareness, Attending to Others’
Emotions, Analyses of Emotions. However, some items of ‘Attending to
others Emotions’ are loaded in other two subscales so it seems that ‘awaring
own emotion’ and ‘awaring others’ emotion’ are the same dimension for
Korean children and adolescents. Finally, the significance and limitations of
this research were discussed.
