This research is a survey and an analysis of opinions on North Korea's nuclear weapons program. The
subjects of the research were juniors at Gongju National University of Education. The research was carried
out in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2013 to a total of 1,455 students.
The percentage of students for or against North Korea's nuclear weapons program didn't show
significant differences in 2005, 2006, and 2007. However, this changed largely in 2013. The percentage of
students for North Korea's nuclear weapons program decreased to a third while the students against the
nuclear program increased greatly. One of the reasons to support North Korea's nuclear weapons program,
'To protect oneself(North Korea) from the U.S.', ranked the top although it has decreased considerably
from the previous survey. Instead, the percentage of supporters on 'Since South Korea cannot develop
nuclear weapons, North Korea should do it.' has greatly increased. The opinions of students who are
against North Korea's nuclear weapons program haven't shown significant differences during the four
surveys. A counterplan on North Korea's nuclear weapons program, 'South Korea should ally with other
nations to make North Korea discard nuclear weapons.', has continually increase from one fourth in 2005
to a half in 2013. A counterplan, 'By promoting reconciliation and cooperation, South Korea should make
sure North Korea do not to use nuclear weapons against us.', has consistently decreased from more than
53% in 2005 to less than 37% in 2013. Compared to 2007, the percentage of students who believe that
North Korea will not discard nuclear weapons has increased in 2013.
