Many elderly people have experience the negative psychological states such as depression and loneliness,
as they are exposed to the stressful issues including not only the financial problems, but also the loss of
their social roles, marginalization due to social and psychological conflicts and the sudden death of their
spouses and acquaintances. Furthermore, without an intervention, it is peculiarly more likely to cause
negative consequences in the elderly than in younger. As a way of coping with geriatric depression, the
Mandala meditation program has been implemented to understand its influence on depression. The
researcher conducted this program once a week for 12 sessions starting in July of 2014, and measured the
Korean types of pre_ and post_ geriatric depression indicators(questionnaire). As a result, the researcher
found out that the program reduced and eased the depression. Moreover, the degree of depression turned
out to be at the level of 7 and 8, which indicated the emotional stabilization stage. After that the researcher
voluntarily (autonomously) practiced the Mandala meditation program and encouraged the elderly people to
deal with their feelings of depression. The continuous implementation of this program will decrease the
geriatric depression and supply the preliminary data(basic information) for helping the elderly people
improve their quality of life in the future.
