This paper will discuss, from a philosophical counseling viewpoint, the
importance of positive thinking, but also the dangers of excessively emphasizing
the value of ‘positivity’ as it may be seen as obsession. The unhappiness of
people in the present day arises from excessively stressing the positive and
optimistic thoughts as the main source of happiness. This paper highlights the
significance of finding one’s own happiness and possessing the right and fair
view of happiness in people who are psychologically struggling, rather than
prescribing a particular way of becoming happy. For this, this paper first
explains the true meaning of happiness as well as its definition and terms.
Then, the possibilities of how the obsession of positivity and excessive
positivity that is also known as worship of optimism can bring a negative
effect are examined. Lastly, how the happiness that is approached at a different
level in positive psychology can be used as one means of healing in
philosophical counseling is pursued in this paper as well.
