본 연구는 남․여 청소년의 휴대전화의존도와 자아존중감을 통합적으로 고려하여 살펴보고, 청소년의 성 별에 따른 휴대전화의존도와 자아존중감 사이의 종단적 상호관계를 검증하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한국 청소년정책연구원에서 2010년 중학교 1학년 학생들을 대상으로 2014년 고등학교 2학년까지 매년 추적조 사를 실시한 한국아동․청소년패널 자료를 자기회귀교차지연 모델을 적용하여 분석하였다. 본 연구의 주 요 결과를 요약하고 논의하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 청소년이 지각한 부모의 부정적 양육방식을 통제한 후 세 시점에 걸친 남․여 청소년의 휴대전화의존도와 자아존중감의 자기회귀계수를 측정한 결과 이전 시점 의 휴대전화의존도와 자아존중감은 각각 이후 시점의 휴대전화의존도와 자아존중감에 유의한 영향을 미 쳤다. 둘째, 청소년이 지각한 부모의 부정적 양육방식을 통제한 후 세 시점에 걸친 남․여 청소년의 휴대 전화의존도와 자아존중감의 교차회귀계수를 측정한 결과 이전 시점의 남․여 청소년의 자아존중감은 이 후 시점의 휴대전화의존도에 유의한 영향을 미친 반면, 이전 시점의 남․여 청소년의 휴대전화의존도가 이후 시점의 자아존중감에는 유의한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 마지막으로 두 변인 간의 관계에 성별의 차 이는 없었다. 이와 같은 연구결과에 기초하여 청소년의 자아존중감과 같은 개인의 긍정적인 심리적 특성 이 이들의 휴대전화의존도의 보호요인이 됨을 알고, 이와 관련하여 연구의 의의와 한계 및 후속 연구를 위한 제언을 제시하였다.
The purpose of this study was to examine the bidirectional relationship between mobile phone dependency (MPD) and self-esteem (SE) of South Korean male and female adolescents in the seventh, ninth, and eleventh grades, while accounting for gender differences. The study used panel data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Study (KCYPS), and three waves of data from 2,327 adolescents were analyzed by means of autoregressive cross-lagged modeling. The results can be summarized as follows. First, MPD and SE were consistently stable for adolescents in the seventh, ninth, and eleventh grades. Second, there was a significant influence of adolescents’ high level of SE on the subsequent low level of MPD. However, there was no significant influence of their high level of MPD on the subsequent low level of SE across time. According to the multi-group analysis, no gender differences were found in the relationship between the two constructs during the study period. These findings suggest that special efforts of enhancing adolescents’ levels of self-esteem are definitely necessary in order to prevent their high levels of mobile phone dependency. Based on the results, implications were also discussed.
