Purpose: This was to identify the effects of the facial massage program on patients who received the surgery for hemifacial
spasm. Method: This was a quasi-experimental study of the pretest and posttest design of the nonequivalent control
group. Result: There were no significant differences in the postoperative facial spasm, facial palsy, headache and
blood pressure between the two groups. However, there were no facial palsy over House-Brackmann Ⅲ in the experimental
group, and facial palsy was further improved on the 20th day of the program period, also. Headache was
decreased after the 2nd day of the operation. Blood pressure tended to increase postoperatively, and it decreased more
after the massage in the experimental group. Conclusion: The facial massage program did not prove to have effects.
However, it should be recommended using patterns of the results in nursing care, and conducting further study by expanding
the number of subjects with facial palsy and observing subjects with facial spasm for a long time.
