The purpose of this study was to forecast the future of music therapy and to offer ideas
and suggestions to develop music therapy in Korea. For this research Delphi Method was
used and 15 professionals and experienced practitioners in music therapy in Korea
participated for three rounds of surveys. Followings are the major findings from this
study. First, respondents forecasted that music therapy in hospice setting will be the
most activated in the future, followed by music therapy for persons with stress
management and dementia. Second, experts predicted that music therapy philosophy will
be based on the integrated theoretical orientation. Third, participants expected that
interventions with combined various therapeutic methods and technologies will be the
most commonly used. In research methods, brain science based research will be the most
increased and practice without music therapist will be somewhat decreased. Fifth, in the
academic and administrative area, education and training for music therapy professionals
will be the most activated. Lastly, respondents raised the necessity of integrated music
therapy associations to operate licence system, but they anticipated that it would not be
established within 10 years.
