Many research studies and case studies on art therapy are associated with psychological problems and
mental illness, and rehabilitation of patients and clients. In contrast, discussions on art, art media, the
characteristics of art, and the therapeutic meaning of creativity and the creative process are lacking. Based
on this phenomenon, in this study, the characteristics of art and the therapeutic meaning of creativity and
the creative process in art therapy were studied. The characteristics of art in art therapy with visual
language, experience of aesthetic sense, emotional expression, symbolization process, catharsis, and
communication were classified and investigated. In addition, the concept of creativity, its characteristics and
the creative process were also used and associated with the therapeutic meanings. The results of the
analysis suggest that the characteristics of art and creativity and the creative process should be reconsidered
as the basis of art therapy identity, but more in-depth studies on this subject are necessary.
