맞춤형 교수는 능력과 특성이 다양한 다수의 학습자가 입급되어 있는 상황에서 효과적으로 수업을 하려는 노력의 일환으로 제안된 것으로, 최근 미국 내 교사와 교육자들 사이에 논의와 연구가 꽤 활발한 접근이다. 하지만, 과연 맞춤형 교수가 새로운 이론인지, 정확하게 무엇을 의미하는지, 실제로 적용 가능한지 등에 대해 부정적인 견해도 만만치 않다. 이 연구의 목적 은 맞춤형 교수를 둘러싼 논쟁을 소개하고, 맞춤형 교수의 성격과 본질을 심층 탐구하는 데 있다. 탐구 결과, 맞춤형 교수의 본질과 성격은 학습자가 도달해야 할 상태로서의 특정 성취 기준이나 학습목표를 수준별, 영역별로 촘촘하면서도 명료하게 드러내는 것, 그리고 학습자가 그 중에서도 가급적 도전적인 목표에 이르도록 교수-학습 활동이나 자료를 세심하게 설계하 고 지원하는 하는 데에서 찾아야 한다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이 작업이 제대로 이루어질 경우, 학습자 개인의 학습목표 도달 정도의 향상은 물론, 교육받은 상태의 의미를 명료하면서 도 풍부하게 드러낼 수 있을 것이다.
Differentiated instruction, as an effort for providing effective instruction to diverse learners in inclusive classrooms, has been quite popular among American school teachers and educational researchers. However, there are some skeptical views on whether the theory of differentiated instruction is new one, what it means, and whether it can be implemented actually in schools. The purpose of this study is to introduce the debates on differentiated instruction, and analyze the essence and critical characteristics of differentiated instruction. According to the analysis, the essence of differentiated instruction must be listing extensively and clearly the vertical and horizontal spectrum of a target learning goal, designing teaching-learning activities or materials, and supporting students to persistently pursue challenging goals. This differentiation will contribute to enhancing individual learning as well as clarifying what an educated person should look like.
