르네상스기에 일어난 과학혁명은 유신론을 이신론으로 대체했으며, 종교개 혁은 신과 종교를 분리시켰다. 그 토대 위에서 계몽주의는 계시종교를 자연종교로 대체하고자 하였다. 계몽주의가 주창한 자연종교는 이신론적인 믿음만으로 이루어 진 ‘종교 없는 신’이었다. 이것은 지금도 우리가 목격하는 자연종교이며, 이것 외에 도 오늘날 두 가지의 자연종교가 더 있다. 하나는 신을 믿지 않는다고 말하면서도 종교의 유용성을 들어 종교를 옹호하는 ‘신 없는 종교’이며, 다른 하나는 유신론적 인 믿음에 근거해 모든 종교적 신조와 교리 그리고 의례를 배격한 채 오직 도덕적 실천만을 강조하는 ‘종교 없는 종교’이다. 종교는 구원을 이야기하며 그 구원은 인 간이 인간다움을 실천하며 사는 도덕적인 삶으로부터 온다고 말할 수 있다. 그러기 에 이들 세 가지 유형의 자연종교는 한 목소리로 도덕적 실천을 강조하고 있다. 그 러나 이들 자연종교는 도덕적 실천을 이끌어낼 수 있는 힘을 갖고 있지 않다. 종교 의 힘이란 초월과의 내적 교감을 통해 형성되는 경외심과 그로부터 나오는 경건함, 즉 종교적 영성으로부터 오는 것인데 이들 종교는 초월로의 길을 닫아 놓거나 또 는 초월로의 길을 열어 놓았다 해도 그것을 볼 수 있는 눈과 귀를 열어 놓지 않았 다. 감각과 상상으로 흐르는 인간의 나약한 본성을 고려할 때 종교의 육화된 부분 인 신조와 교리 그리고 의례 없이는 초월과의 교감이 이루어질 수 없다. 그러므로 인간이 종교를 통해 구원을 원한다면 다시금 계시종교로 돌아가야 한다.
Due to the Scientific Revolution and Reformation in the Renaissance, theism was replaced by deism and God was separated from religion. As a result, the Enlightenment was to replace revealed religion with natural religion. The natural religion that was advocated by the Enlightenment was a belief on ‘God without religion’ or the deistic belief. This is the natural religion that we are witnessing now, in addition to this there are two more natural religion. One is a “religion without God” emphasizing only the usefulness of religion without the belief in God, the other one is a “religion without religion” emphasizing only the moral practice based on theistic belief without accepting all religious creeds, doctrines and rituals. It can be said that religion promises salvation, which comes from moral life to practice humanity. Thus, these religions emphasize the moral practice with one voice. But the problem is that these religions have no force that can lead to moral action. The force of religion comes from the religious spirituality, i.e. reverence and piety which are formed through the inner rapport with transcendence. However these religions close the road to transcendence or do not open the eyes and ears to sense the road. Given the weak nature of human flowing sense and imagination, the inner rapport with transcendence is impossible without the help of the creeds, doctrines and rituals which are the incarnated parts of religion. So if we want get a salvation through religion, we must go back to revealed religion.
