The goal of this study is to categorize the perception patterns of spiritually oriented social
work practice by using Q-methodology. Q-samples that consist of 33 statements represent
subjectivity of spirituality, social work practice and the relations between the two. The Q-samples
were drawn from the Q-population which included previous research outcomes, literature on social
work practice, and interview results from 23 social workers who participated in the Q sorting. The
data from 23 subjects were analysed by Main Factor Analysis using QUANL program and it was
found that three factor structures used in this study were appropriate. Social workers’ perceptions
on spiritually oriented social work practice accounted for 52.72% of the total variance. The
concept of spiritually oriented social work practice is classified into three types: “Mission
Carrier(Type 1),” “Professional Helper(Type 2),” and “Practitioner of Love(Type 3).” Based on these
results, the researcher suggests the necessity for and implications of introducing spirituality in the
education of social work practice.
