The purpose of this study was to analyze the different responses in “Person in the Rain” (PITR) drawing
test according to stress and depression level in university athletes, and to investigate the possibility of
applying the drawing test as a diagnostic tool in measuring stress and depression levels. To achieve this
research purpose, perceived stress(PSS) scale, Beck depression inventory (BDI) scale and PITR drawing test
were used for 251 university athletes attending H university in Seoul. T-test was performed to examine
different responses between the upper group and lower group based on perceived stress scale (PSS) score
and BDI score, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to examine different responses
according to individual background. The results were as follows. First, there was positive correlation
between stress level and depression level in university athletes. Second, there was significant difference in
the response characteristic of the PITR drawing test according to the level of stress. Third, there was
significant difference in the response characteristic of the PITR drawing test according to the level of
depression (BDI). Fourthly, there was significant difference in the response characteristic of the PITR
drawing test according to each athlete’s sport, but there was not significant difference according to gender
or exercise regimen.
