Creativity can be better explained through the concept of metacognition. It is because that creativity is manifested through the complex cognitive processes and that the expression of creativity is expected to be easier when those complex processes are well being aware and regulated. Thus, creativity theorists in 1980s and 1990s stressed the great importances of the relation between creativity and metacognition to the understanding of creativity. However, studies clearly showing the exact relationships between creativity and metacognition have been rare. This article introduced explanations about the relationship between creativity and metacognition, and reviewed major and relevant research conducted on the issue to date. Based on the findings from the review, the directions for future research on creativity and metacognition are proposed.
