This study reviewed on the symbolism of insects in sandtray therapy. Symbolic meanings are situated in human being’s archetype of collective unconsciousness. Human beings represent their whole heart and soul in the sandtray to make use figures. The origin of symbolic meanings were their cultures, myths, folklores. So this study preferentially was summarized symbolic meanings of insects read the literatures and then was looked over the symbolism of insects in the subject’s sandtray. The results were; firstly, I found that the symbolic meanings of insects were positive and negative meanings. The positive meanings were collaboration, industry, perseverance, discipline etc. related with an efficiency of society and camouflage, revival, immortality, transforming, happiness, innocence etc. related with psychological mechanism or breeding. The negative meanings were poisoning, capricious, superficially, vainglorious etc. or too much sexual desire and breeding. The symbolic meanings are related transformation of insects. Complete transformative insects involved positive symbolic meanings such as revival, immortality. Incomplete transformative or non-transformative insects involved negative symbolic meanings but little revival, immortality. Secondly, the symbolism of insects in sandtray therapeutic cases were suppressed child’s self-consciousness (lady beetle), a shadow of good mother(black spider), anxiety of spiritless (butterfly and dragonfly on the tree) or superficial selfish vainglorious (swallowtail butterfly), look for, desire of improvement(grasshopper) etc.. Exactly, subject’s psychological mechanism was represented positive or negative in the sandtray to make use insect figures. But this study limited to generalize a small number of cases.
