This study was to investigate the effects of the art therapy program, on a
woman suffering from maladjustment schema and self-destructive behavior
due to BPD, which was based on the Theory of BPD Psychological Schema
developed by Dr. Jeffrey Young. The subject of this study is a 19-year-old
female diagnosed as BPD at a hospital in Seoul. This art therapy was
conducted with a total of 33 sessions of an 120-150 minute session per each,
2–3 times a week from Jan 2 to April 25, 2015. To do so, the questionnaires
of maladjustment schema, Measures of Self-murder measure and Suicide
Impulse were applied as the pre-, post- and follow-up tests, and changes
and symbols at each session of treatment were quantitatively analyzed. The
results of this study are as follows: First, this therapy had a positive impact
on the relaxation of maladjustment schema in a lady with BPD. Second, this
therapy also had a positive effect on the alleviation of self-destructive
behavior in this lady with BPD. Third, this therapy positively helped to
relieve the maladjustment schema and self-destructive behavior of her in
view of the results of observing the degree of change and symbols during a
course of treatment. The results of this study could indicate that this art
therapy based on Young’s Theory of BPD Psychological Schema had a
positive effect on the mitigation of maladjustment schema and
self-destructive behavior of a woman suffering from BPD.
