Based on the individual psychological treatment and counseling theory of Adler, this study is to
understand the source of the issues that maladjusting teenagers experience and analyze the lifestyle that
can react to stress situations and find a way to cut the link of the vicious cycle they are going through
and present a policy to prevent such issues. In order to fulfill the purpose of the study, we analyzed
novels and studied the lifestyle that are shown during the process of maladjusting teenagers overcoming
inferiority and pursuing superiority.
The protagonist of the novel 『The catcher in the Rye』, Holden Colfield is a rebellious teenager who
stops studying continuously. Holden who has intellectual inferiority to his siblings takes on a evading
lifestyle that evades the life issues to dodge the stress from inferiority. This brings isolation from the
community and brings impulsive style such as depression and anxiety.
In individual psychology, the reason why such various issues arise in life is that during the process of
compensating the inferiority, it forms a misguided pathological phenomenon of inferiority and false
lifestyle from the lack of community mind for the maladjusting teenager. Therefore, in order to help the
major issues of maladjusting teenagers, we can offer to adjust the errors of inferiority complex and
improve the community mind and modify the false life style as a healing method.
