The study aims to figure out what effect the language intervention activity with
multimedia fairy tales has on the communication behavior and comprehension of
children with intellectual disabilities. Three children with intellectual disabilities from
the kindergarten for children with intellectual disabilities in G city, Gyeongsangbuk-do
Province participated in the study as subjects, and the multiple-probe design was
employed. Total 23 fairy tales were used for the experiments; the language
intervention activities started after the children completed watching the multimedia
fairy tales; during the activities, the children were asked to look at the pictures of the
fairy tales. Additionally, the conversation provoking questions were given to them in
order to observe and measure their comprehension and communication behavior.
The outcomes are as follows. First, the language intervention activity based on
multimedia fairy tales showed a positive impact on the children’s communication
behavior; it helped the children with intellectual disabilities to improve, maintain their
communication behavior and increase the verbal expression. Second, the language
intervention activity based on multimedia fairy tales showed a positive impact on the
children’s comprehension of the stories; the children showed better comprehension of
the questions and improved expressions for stories. This implies that the language
intervention activity based on multimedia fairy tales is an effective way of improving
the communication behavior and comprehension of the children with intellectual
disabilities. To increase the children’s ability(comprehension the stories and
communication with others), it is necessary to conduct the generalization under a
natural condition; and various intervention methods are required for the children to
increase their abilities of using an important tool of communication, the verbal
expression. Lastly, involving the family members of the children is also important to
study the way of delivering the multimedia fairy tales in a more positive way.
