This study explores the newly introduced concept of the Scholarship of Teaching and
Learning (SoTL), a concept of academic expertise in college teaching, and further examines
the program development to embody SoTL. While scholarly professorship of an individual
in general meant to contribute to the body of content knowledge by conducting academic
research in his or her field, questions and issues regarding teaching and learning in the
classroom were not considered to be appropriate for conducting academic studies by
university professors, except for those in education major. This study conducts a literature
review on SoTL to re-conceptualize the meaning of academic expertise and professorship,
and proposes a SoTL program model for faculty development. It defines SoTL as the
on-going professional development by learning to do research on student learning within
their own course through collaborative peer community. SoTL has three competency areas
and detailed competencies: knowledge of college teaching and learning, skill of doing
education action research, collaboration and teamwork skills The proposed SoTL program
consists of three phases: initial stage, action stage, and extension stage. Strategies and
considerations for the successful establishment of SoTL are also discussed.
