This study analyzes taxation majors’ perception of the introduction of a carbon tax in Korea which has
been discussed as a means to impose charge on carbon emissions to solve the problem resulting from
global climate change. 179 out of the 188 respondents, that is, 95.2 percent of them perceive that global
warming reaches a serious level. They agree on the necessity of measures to reduce greenhouse gas.
However they show negative reactions for the raising of energy prices and energy-related taxes. Since the
introduction of a carbon tax gives a burden to low-income households and energy-intensive industries, they
suggest that a careful approach is necessary for its introduction. On the other hand, female students are
more concerned about global environmental issues than male students are.
This study is of great significance in that it provides policy implications through the taxation majors’
opinions in charge of the future tax administration.
