출발언어에서 목표언어로의 번역과정에는 필연적으로 두 개의 개별언어가 개입되며, 번역분야에는 문학, 법률문서, 과학기술 텍스트, IT 매뉴얼의 번역 등 다양한 종류의 번역 장르가 존재한다. 그 중에 서 특허번역은 특허관련 문서의 번역과정과 번역결과를 가리킨다. 특허문서는 출원을 통하여 출발언 어권에서 법률적인 효력을 지닌다. 해외 특허출원을 통하여 번역된 특허문서는 목표언어권에서 법률 적인 효력을 지닌 공식적인 문서의 지위를 가지게 된다. 영문 특허번역에는 과학, 기술적인 전문용어 가 관련됨에 따라 이공계열의 특수목적영어에 대한 지식이 필수적이다. 따라서 특허번역이란 출원 시 그 번역본이 법률적인 효력을 지니게 되는 특수목적영어를 위주로 하는 번역이며 그러한 번역과정과 번역결과로 특징지을 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 특허명세서를 비롯한 특허문서의 번역목적에 따라 어떠 한 번역전략이 적용되는지를 살펴본다. 아울러 특허번역을 수행하기 위한 웹 코퍼스의 검색과 코퍼스 의 구축 및 활용, 그리고 코퍼스 툴을 활용하는 방법론과 이에 따른 특허번역 교육에 있어서의 유용 성을 제시한다.
Two languages are inevitably involved in the process of translation from the source language to the target language. There are various translation genres, such as literary, legal, and science and technology texts and IT manuals, etc. Among them, patent translation is the process and the result of the translation of patent documents. The patent documents will have legal effects through patent application in the jurisdiction of the source language. The patent documents translated into the target language and applied abroad will acquire a status of official documents with legal effects in the jurisdiction of the target language. The knowledge about English for Specific Purposes(ESP) of science and technology is needed for the patent translation. Accordingly, the patent translation can be characterized by (1) the translation centered around ESP of science and technology which will have legal effects when applied and (2) the translation process and the result of such texts. In this article, the strategies of translation applied to patent translation are studied according to the Skopos of the translation, and the methodology of searching web corpora, compiling and utilizing corpora and using corpus tools is suggested in order to facilitate the patent translation and its education
