‘Pansori(판소리)’ is a narrative performance within the oral literature
genre that is performed by a ‘gwangdae(廣大)’ who has professional
performance techniques. That is why it is suitable for finding how its
narrativity and performance characteristics work with orality as its
central axis. The biggest feature of pannsori is that it has a ‘story’, and
the main means to deliver that ‘story’ is through the narration of the
intermediary narrator. The gwangdae who has the role of the
intermediary narrator causes the realization of the narration through
chang(唱), aniri(아니리), neorumsae(너름새) and so on.
The delivery of the story through intermediary narration is related to
‘narrativity’, and the emphasis on the vividity of delivery and unique
realization is related to ‘performance characteristics’. Consequently, it can
be said that ‘narrativity’ works as a centripetal force, and ‘performance
characteristics’ work as a centrifugal force on pansori. ‘Performance
characteristics’ combine much strongly with ‘orality’ than ‘narrativity’
does. That’s because ‘orality’ that thoroughly actualizes the requirements
of ‘me, here, now’, shares a bigger area with ‘vividity, sociality and
circumstance-oriented side’ that is required by ‘performance
characteristics’. The composition of ‘pansori saseol’ has ‘narrativity’ as
its main principle. ‘Narrativity’ works as a centripetal on the sharing of
‘danwi-saseol(單位辭說)’, the continuous arousal of the narrative structure, the utilization of ‘jaedam(才談)’ and so on.
On the other hand, ‘performance characteristics’ work as a centrifugal
when the utilization of ‘saseolchirae(사설치레)’, the narrative irony by the
maximization of scenes, and the vividity of the performance are shown.
This is usually when things are focused on ‘realization’ more than
‘narrativity’. But many are hard to divide in this way. That is because
some might have ambivalence and some might move back and forth
between those two characteristics depending on the circumstance. So it
can be said that the features Pansori possesses have been developed by
the harmonious realization of orality, narrativity, and performance
characteristics.
