In the context of narrative theory, anthropomorphism is generally regarded as a strategy for developing non-realistic, fantastic stories whereby human characteristics are applied to non-human characters. If that’s the case, animal story could be classified into two categories: realistic story about animals without any anthropomorphic traits and non-realistic story about anthropomorphized animals. However, critically accepting the thesis of Greimas on the fundamentally anthropomorphic character of narrative syntax, this paper tries to show that narrative discourse tends to anthropomorphize whenever non-human beings such as animals and plants are placed at the center of a story, regardless of whether it is realistic or not. To this end, we propose the anthropomorphic concept of narrative subjectivity as the unity of practical and reflective subjectivity and analyze some of Aesop’s Fables to explore how narrative discourse constructs non-human characters as anthropomorphic narrative subjects.
