The purpose of this study was to analyze gender and career types of illustrations in 7th grade science
textbooks based on 2009 revision curriculum. In this study, the illustrations of five science textbooks
developed under the 2009 revision curriculum were analyzed on gender ratio and career types. The analysis
framework was consisted the frequencies of gender, the types of careers etc. The frequencies of male and
female appearing in illustrations were counted. And types of career in illustrations were analyzed. The
result of this study, males were more frequently represented than females in illustrations of all units in
textbooks. The careers of male were described to be more diversified than those of female. In illustrations,
scientists and doctors were mostly male, while announcers were female. Also scientists appearing in
illustrations of science textbooks were mostly male, there were few female scientists. The results of this
study suggest that science textbooks based 2009 revision curriculum contain gender-role stereotyping in
illustrations. In particular, the results of this study indicate that there is a need to prevent gender-role
stereotyping from appearing in illustrations of science textbooks in the future.
