We have made a Disability Awareness Education Program based on our university
research. In this study, we used the program with primary school pupils in their fifth
year (Io and 11 years old) and discussed how effective the program wa8.
The program con8i8t8 of two units of les80ns : a lecture in a clas8room and practical
activities in a 8chool gymnasium.
The features of the program are:
- Participation of a blind person
- To let the pupi18 have practical knowledge such a8 the purpose of tactile block8 and
how to help a blind per80n
- To let the pupils experience walking and guiding a blind person
- To let the pupils feel the distinctive features of 80me coins while blindfolded
For assessing the effect8 of the program, pupils were required to fill a questionnaire
before and after the les80n8. The queationnaire consiated of
- Scale for Attitude toward Special Ability of Blind People (Tokuda, 1991)
- Objective teat for checking how much the pupils understood the contents of the
Program
The 8ummary of the analysi8 i8 a8 follows:
- In some item8 of the Scale for Attitude toward Special Ability of Blind People, score
change waa positive and statiatically significant.
- some simulation exerciaes (such as touching the distinctive features of aome coins,
putting shoes on, while blindfolded) were recognized as the effective example of the
way of "disability simulation".
- After the lessons, almost all pupils learned the correct way of walking and guiding a
blind person.
* Integrated Study ia a new subject introduced to the Japanese school curriculum in
element8ry 8nd junior high schools from April 2002. In this subject, 8choo18 have the
flexibility to provide 8 variety of topica and materia18, such 88 environmental issues,
international culture, information technology, etc.
