This study provides a review on a swallowing therapy program as a part of a
comprehensive language rehabilitation program for the elderly patients with severe
aphasia. Based on a review of the literature on the cause and treatment of dysphagia
and treatment efficacy studies, an extensive intervention program was suggested. The
treatment options for dysphagia include direct modification, such as the
postural/environmental control and the food selection/administration. The indirect
modifications are designed to improve patients’ cognitive and perceptual status, oral
hygiene, muscle tone and movements, and normal swallowing reflex. The suggested
program are should be re-designed for the individual patient, and effectiveness of
treatment strategies should be reevaluated frequently.
