The purpose of this study is to examine what effects transition education program
have on mentally handicapped students’ career preparation and career interest. The
program is designed to prepare mentally handicapped students to enter into society
after graduation and have careers that are appropriate to their ability and function to
be able to manage their lives and to raise interest in career that makes them to
sustain their careers.
The result of this study can be summarized as follows.
First, application of transition program connected to community raised career interest
of mentally handicapped high school students. Especially, there was significant
growth of p<0.05 in architecture, office assistant, restaurant services, housework, and
personal services. Also, there was significant growth of p<0.01 in vehic1e and
laundry services.
Second, application of transition program connected to community changed career
interest preference of mentally handicapped high school students. The changed career
interest preferences are vehicle, personal services, housework, office assistant,
restaurant service, gardening, nursing, laundry service, goods management,
architecture, and animal breeding
Third, application of transition program connected to community raised career
preparation of mentally handicapped high school students. Especially, there was
significant growth of p<0.05 in general life and inappropriate behavior categoη. Also,
there was significant growth of p<0.01 in socialization function and work function.
Based on the study result, this study suggests the followings.
First, transition program connected to community raises career interest of mentally
handicapped students and it will raise their recognition and understanding on career
before they get into the society.
Second, transition program connected to community will make mentally han버capped
students to improve their career preparation so that the students can have stable
career life after graduation. Furthermore, they can improve their quality of life
through the program.
Third, transition program connected to community will raise consciousness of
employer about handicapped people and it will have a big impact on hiring
handicapped students afterward.
Fourth, application of transition program connected to community will induce
positive reaction from parents of the students which will make parents to take a role
as a supporter in special school career education.
