A survey was conducted by use of written questionnaires to elementary, junior and high school teachers from China based upon how they perceive the handicapped and how they are bringing about an awareness of the handicapped to their classes. This survey resulted in the following; 1) A percentage of teachers did not mind working along side a handicapped person in the work place . They also felt that the handicapped should have the same rights, privileges and opportunities when it comes to learning and higher education. However, a large percentage of teachers did not agree on having their taxes raised due to the cost for services for education and the welfare for the handicapped. 2) A large percentage of the teachers agreed that the general public has compassion and feel sympathy for the handicapped but at the same time felt that the handicapped are discriminated against. 3) A large percentage of teachers perceived the handicapped as people who are blind, visually impaired or with some other kind of physical handicap . When it was brought to their attention that people with hearing difficulties are a part of handicapped community as well, they enthusiastically felt the need for compassion and need of awareness for these people too . 4) More than fifty percent of the teachers had taught at one time or another something about the handicapped to their classes. They also brought about awareness by role playing and taking field trips to ins titutions for the handicapped as well as using textbooks for reading and studying.
