This study analyzed the contents of the movies that depict main characters with a disability in the interactive perception of the movie and the audience through the movie’s contents reflecting the realistic problems and the issues of the times and the movie contents reflecting the psychology of the public in order to improve the awareness of the disabled and improve the level of cultural welfare. The study analyzed 81 movies that have main characters with disabilities among 151 movies with characters with a disability from 1978 to 2016. The movies were classified by disability type, movie release year, movie theme, genre, main character's gender, and country of production. As a result, male characters were three times more common than female, and the growing theme and drama genre had the most. In most movies, the disability was shown as an inferiorly, the main character was represented as socially weak, and a dark and mainly negative flow was depicted. In conclusion, it is necessary to strengthen various supports for the change of perception and social integration of the disabled using media such as the movie industry. Additionally, integrated research for independence and participation of persons with disabilities should be conducted academically.
