This study assumes that Art therapy, -which is composed of a triangular relationship of a therapist, a
client, and a work of art, - requires differentiated case-conceptualization because of its uniqueness. The
purpose of this research was to examine therapists’ cognition about case-conceptualization. An expert group
composed of practicing art therapists had a discussion in two separate groups and analyzed the results;
their finding follow. First, the therapists perceived case-conceptualization as an essential element for the
therapy process. Second, the utility of case-conceptualization helps them to know clients’ problems and to
proceed with counselling effectively. Third, practical limits in the clinical setting, a lack of cognition because
of absence of education, diversity, and the complexity of art therapy are the difficulties involved in
case-conceptualization. Fourth, an art evaluation with a work of art and media should be added to factual
and inferential information. Fifth, an appropriate case-conceptualization style should be provided through
continuous education and research about case-conceptualization, and therapists' habit to conceptualize cases
is much needed for their development. Through this study, I expect that more researches of
case-conceptualization for art therapy will take place in the future.
