The purpose of this study was to analyze factors of opportunity to learn(OTL). To
achieve the goal of this study, the selected research questions are as follows:
First, what are the component areas of OTL for students with intellectual disability
in inclusive classes of elementary schools? Second, what are the factors by the
component areas of OTL for students with intellectual disability in inclusive classes
of elementary schools?
To answer the questions, the researcher developed「Inventory on OTL Factors for
Students with Intellectual Disability」, distributed it to 125 general education teachers
and 125 special education teachers in elementary schools around the nation, conducted
factor analysis to analyse the component factors. The results of this study are as
follows:
First, the component areas of OTL for students with intellectual disability in
inclusive classes of elementary schools should be comprised of curriculums,
instructional quality, and time. Second, the component factors of OTL for students
with intellectual disabilities in inclusive elementary classes include curriculum
planning, content, evaluation, implementation, and goals of 'curriculum areas', lesson
management, lesson implementation, student relationships, student characteristics,
school supports, and teacher supports of 'instructional quality of areas', and planned
time, instructional time, and learning time of 'time areas'.
The findings raise a need to provide proper and systematic supports for the factors
of curriculums, instructional quality and time so that students with intellectual
disability will participate in lessons not to be excluded from an inclusive class and
fulfill their utmost achievements.
