This case study aims to understand the biographies of the visually impaired
student P by reconstructing from the researcher’s perspective. To this end, focusing
on the student with severe visual impairment, the narrative interviews developed by
Fritz Schütze were conducted. The collected data were reconstructed by analyzing
'the process structure of the life progress', 'narration characteristics', & 'individual
and social resources'. As a result, the following characteristics were found. First, it
has characteristics of life process which has been living in inclusive education and
separate educational environment. Second, it has the characteristics of psychological
demand that want to live ‘inclusive life’ as an aim of life. Third, it has a structural
characteristic of life that challenges from ‘excluded life’ to ‘included life’. Fourth, it
has characteristics of positive & challenging life attitude and change of perspective.
In conclusion, ‘P’ has been living a challenging life based on professional success,
recognizing his disability identity as a subject of life walking toward ‘included life’
and utilizing personal-social resources directly or indirectly. This study is
significant that exploring and illuminating his biographies by reconstructing life of
student with severe visual impairment. In the future, it will be useful researchers
and related experts who want to look at the biographies of students with other
disabilities as well as visual impairments through a life-history point of view. In
addition, this study have shown that a research on life history can be a useful
research method for providing a technical, concrete, and practical support in study
related to special education.
