This study is trying to understand social expectations of teacher's roles by analyzing the
newspapers which contain various societal perspectives. For this, the newspapers were
analyzed about teacher's roles during the last ten-year period(2007~2016). The newspapers
were the Munhwa Ilbo, the Hankyoreh and the Hankook Ilbo that represented the
conservatives, the progressives and the middle course. By using content analysis, frequency
analysis and in-depth analysis, the results were deduced and visualized.
As a result, social expectations of teacher's roles in the newspapers were prevention of
school violence, counseling and healing, specialist in communication, facilitator,
guardian(caregiver), character education, knowledge education, socialization, career education
and educationist of children in the top 10 list. In addition, there were 17 different kinds of
teacher's roles. There are so many social expectations of teacher's roles.
This study is a signification that suggests social expectations of teacher's roles with
various societal perspectives. For this, the roles that teachers should develop can be
prioritized among social expectations of teacher's roles. Also, if teachers develop and play
these roles, it will contribute powerfully to enhancing social satisfaction about an education.
Furthermore, such a deduction of teacher's roles will be helpful to decide on purpose and
curriculum in teacher-training and teacher-reorientation.
