Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of electroencephalogram based
self-cognition training (EEG based SCT) with donepezil in patients with mild to moderate
dementia.
Methods : Forty patients who were diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia and vascular dementia was
included. The subjects were divided into two groups; donepezil group and EEG based SCT
with donepezil group. EEG based SCT was given 30 minutes for 3 times a week for 8
weeks. Self-attention report, cognitive function test, activity of daily living, depression, neuropsychiatric
behavior and quality of life were conducted before and after the intervention. We
analyzed the functional improvement of each group before and after intervention and compared
two groups.
Results : The attention questionnaire scale and the word color test of computerized neurocognitive function
test was improved in EEG based SCT with donepezil group. However, there was no significant
difference between the groups in other cognitive function test, activity of daily living,
depression, neuropsychiatric behavior and quality of life when compared with the group in donepezil
alone.
Conclusion : There was a significant effect on self-attention report and visual attention of EEG based SCT
with donepezil in mild to moderate dementia. However, compared with only donepezil therapy,
EEG based SCT with donepezil therapy did not show superiority in cognitive function
and independence level of activities of daily living.
