The purpose of this study was to directly inquire an art therapist’s mother to contrive the foundation for
the therapist, to deepen self-communion, and to enlarge the relational dimension with other people. During
the inquiry of the relationship between the therapist and her mother, the researcher applied the ontological
inquiry method to construct the importance of the therapist, her value, and her goal. In this purpose, the
researcher performed 20 sessions of art therapy, analyzed collected data, and depicted drawings that
reflected the thoughts and emotions in the practice of self-understanding on the basis of its result with a
written autobiographical journal. When the therapist set aside her prejudice that her mother was just an
object of the therapy, and accepted her mother as she was, the therapist could build a true relationship
with her mother and realized the emotion of “understanding.” Counselling among family members was the
process to overcome the risk of a dual relationship, and drawing provided a way to express emotions. The
therapist discovered the true “me” when the therapist accepted herself as she was and expressed her
desires. This experience was an opportunity to discern the therapist’s inner-mind regarding her value and
role.
