The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences of a couple in crisis narratively. Thus, this study
used a narrative inquiry, and analyzed the couple’s narratives on their experiences of divorce, by sharing and
looking into the lives of the participants. The couple had 12 sessions of art therapy, each consisting of 60-90
minutes. During art therapy, they describe the main themes as ‘superficial listening’, ‘expression of repressed
mind’, ‘need of recognition behind anger’, ‘experiencing different life stories’, and ‘reconciliation and understanding
each other’. Three types of meaning of experiencing marital relationship in art therapy were identified: ‘initiation
of art therapy indicates a wish for reconciliation of marital relationship’, ‘images of art work reveals the couple’s
truth in their mind’, and ‘need for being understood by someone else’. As a result, an art therapy contributed
to the couple’s improved marital relationship especially when they realized that the resentment and anger they
thought they held against each other were no longer existing, and an attempt of mutual acceptance was made.
